Stephanie Lende has been moving from homeschooling to a more unschooling philosophy with her 5 kids. I recently began following the Lende family here in Phoenix for my masters project. I'm exploring the life of full-time RV families, and documenting what it's like to live in such a small space with a family. The Lende's have 5 children and have been living in their trailer for about 9 months now. They're a very happy family, and seem to love the trailer life, and they have no plans to settle for a while...

i'm really going to miss these trees in our yard. i can't believe we are leaving columbia so soon. and who knows when we'll have a yard again. maybe i'll buy a bonsai tree for the prius.

tonight i photographed joel's friend michael photographing joel's art. he does this so joel will have copies of all his work, as well as images to use for his website. joel's recent work will be exhibiting at ps gallery beginning april 1.

this past weekend i visited nancy workman's farm where the family raises shetland sheep and alpacas. i was mostly just exploring the idea of kids living in nature for my masters project since nancy's granddaughter now runs around on the same land where nancy did when she was her age. i also needed an excuse to get out of the house and shoot. i mostly listened to nancy speak of the history of the farm and what life was like for her and her family, but i was able to snap a few shots also. i even made it back home w/out taking the baby sheep.

At 28, Joel Sager is one of the youngest artists that displays work at PS Gallery in Columbia. He is one of only four artists who are permanently represented there, displaying new work seasonally. Earlier this month he moved to Orr Street Studios, where he shares studio space with other artists. His studio was previously in his basement, but he enjoys being around other artists and having the luxury of proper ventilation for the chemicals he uses.
Joel often uses vintage wallpaper and fabrics in his art to create texture and depth. This piece was salvaged from an unwanted bag of fabric that Joel gladly took to re purpose.

Joel has a very thoughtful approach to his art. He thinks of each painting as a narrative, and tries to leave something open so viewers will have their own interpretation as well.

Joel likes to work in negative spaces with his art, which takes more time and effort than simply painting the shapes. He uses a deconstructive paint process that involves an underpainting of color and collage using items such as wallpaper, construction paper, material, or newspaper, a subsequent wash with roofing tar, and a scraping on and off of oil pigment with a palette knife. Here he takes a moment to reflect his work.
